THERAPY CHOP 50..’THE LIGHT’

9 Jan

After 4 weeks without creating any music, the festive indulgence had me chomping at the bit for a little BEAT INN therapy! Last friday the group was set with the task of slicing up ‘Norman Connors‘ classic, ‘You are my starship‘. A song much sampled by loads of people already, two of which were massive for me growing up, one by Adina Howard and ‘Taste your love‘ by ‘Horace Brown’…Much fun was had making this chop and I continued to test my ability at letting go of attachments to ideas.. you know that gut feeling when something just isn’t right but your not prepared to try something else because of all the time you’ve already spent on it? It still has loads of scope for development, but..thats the Therapy..CHOP 50..’THE LIGHT’

FINAL WORKSHOP

23 Aug

A special thank you to Daniel for capturing some moments from the last workshop at Fabrica. It was a great night and culmination of all the previous meeting with the space. The evening flowed with a real sense of ease, I felt like i could walk away and allow the participants to take control of the sounds and explore how things worked themselves.

TWO DOWN..ONE TO GO

15 Aug

The plans for my final workshop at Fabrica are underway, a global jam in the space via the World Wide Web!

The previous two workshops explored ‘Cascade’ and the space that’s housed it… on every occasion the buckets have surprised, tested and wowed me.

To begin with I looked at how we could capture and play the sounds generated by the Installation and how far we could stretch these from their original character to create interesting and varied compositions. One of my favorite discoveries was that a few of the buckets had ‘Squeaky’ pulleys after emptying. This anomaly allowed us to created a varied tonal pallet of sounds to drive ethereal arpeggiated synthesizers to low distorted bass lines while the splashes were our steady percussive accompaniment.

Throughout the evening we developed and collected an exciting collection of sounds and grooves and also a much better understanding of how to work with Stephane’s piece.

The second workshop was the first attempt at opening a virtual window to an online community. Other artists from around the world had been invited to contribute sounds that they felt would interact with the piece and also undergo their own metamorphis in the space before returning to the sender. Participants in the gallery worked with these samples and continued to collect new ‘splashes’ and ‘pulley squeaks’ throughout the evening. Compositions were created using a variety of interfaces and further manipulated with wireless controllers. All ages joined in with what was a fun and explorative meeting of ideas.

I have also had two opportunities to discreetly mill around the space, try out different ideas and for people to come and have a chat or see what I’m up to. On Saturday I decided to try and VJ some of the sights and sounds created by ‘Cascade’. As with many of my ideas the practical application doesn’t always hit me until I’m there trying to make it happen and so it was with Saturday that most of my time in the space was spent waiting for what I was certain would be the ‘next’ bucket to tip, getting it wrong on most occasions.. and I thought I had the piece sussed!?

Eventually though I managed to capture some nice video clips which I experimented playing through the audio environments created to mirror ‘Cascades’ functions, which I hope to share soon.

The next workshop will be this Wednesday the 17th between 7-9pm. Come down and get involved.

THERAPY CHOP 29

12 Aug

This week’s BEAT INN THERAPY CHOP… number 29! This weeks sample was ‘She’s leaving Home’ By Syreeta & Stevie Wonder. Normally I wouldn’t sample anything by Mr Wonder, I think maybe because I’m a little too attached to his work to chop it up… but the task was set!..and for the second week running it all seemed to fall into place effortlessly? Hope you enjoy it! X
